Free speech and academic censorship
The U.S. is preparing for war. At Berkeley you may not quote anti-war
writings, because they make a political point. Quotations will have to
stand on queue until peace time. New York Times damages the image of
free speech when the need of this image is most important because free
speech is suppressed.

A reminder
Recently I wrote about a scientific journal specializing in industrial
bias. There are more journals sharing the same business idea, and also
reference works in common use in the medical and research communities with
industrial bias. It would be to great help with
suggestions of media to take a closer look at.

University in Geneva on
undisclosed tobacco money
In a press release from The Geneva University on December 20th, the
University distances itself from the attitude of professor Ragnar Rylander
who concealed funding by Philip Morris from the ethical commission in
charge of reviewing research protocols, and from an editor in chief of a
scientific journal.
Scientific journals with negative risk as business idea
Recently I wrote about a scientific journal specializing in industrial
bias. Today I had a mail telling about an article, in another journal,
negating the risk of cancer from a suspect chemical at an industrial plant
where there is a cluster of that cancer form. The research was funded by
the industry, and the researchers were connected to that same industry.
However the ties went undisclosed. So, there is an obvious case of
greenwashing. When results show no risk, and those saying so have hidden
ties to those taking advantage of the results, then you are entitled to
suspect that there is something wrong.
In the mail was said that the journal in question goes by the nickname The
Journal of Negative Epidemiology. Also scientific journals are driven
by business ideas. Now, having two examples of journals with greenwashing
related business ideas the following question seems motivated:
Which scientific journals deserve the designation risk deniers?
If you have a suggestion please tell. It is
helpful because it's one way of mapping of greenwashing activities.
What I learnt from the message recieved added to another story, so I wait to
tell until I can give a fuller picture.

The concept of greenwashing was recently introduced to the Swedish

A Scientific Journal with
Industrial Bias as Its Specialty
If scientific journals suffer lack of scientific integrity there will be
problems. When regulation processes pay most attention to the journals
lacking scientific integrity it gets worse. The example illustrating the
problems is Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology.

Philip Morris runs away from tobacco
New York Times yesterday told that the owners of Philip Morris plans to change the name
to Altria Group, Inc. NYT says that, according to the company's executives, the action
is taken "to reduce the drag on the company's reputation that association with the
world's most famous cigarette maker has caused".
The
press release has nothing to say about reputation, but shows the proposed new logo,
and offers a webcam of the press conference. The cigarette companies will keep their names.
David S. Kessler, former commissioner of the FDA, and now dean at Yale University, is cited
saying "They are running away from tobacco". PR Watch web daily,
Spin of the Day, used the header
Killer Named Philip Morris Says "Call Me Altria".
If this action is effectuated, it will mean that Philip Morris will not running the
tobacco lobbying activities in
Washington and elsewhere. Campaigning for tobacco will be run by the Altria Group, Inc.

100.000 dollars a day!
Three years ago the lobbying power house the Tobacco Institute was shut down in order to
stop the tobacco industry's overwhelming lobbying activities. Now running one by one, the
four largest tobacco companies in the U.S. for the two and half years ending June 30, have
been registered to spend more than 100.000 dollars each work day on Capitolium.

About the dangers of a little mercury...
A recent press release gives interesting information about Thimerosal, a mercury containing
preservative in vaccines. Law suits are going on in the U.S. on the grounds that Thimerosal
may cause autism in children who have followed the national vaccination program. Here you
may find some fuel added to the fire.
