This article from January 2000 illustrates the dental community's interest
in precaution. Ionizing radiation presents a health risk, and this is also
the case with low doses. Low dose risks are hard to determine. There is
an obvious vested interest behind the use of radioactive compounds in
dental materials. Another example of how low radiation is used without
precautionary measures is warheads on missiles used in the Gulf War and
in former Yugoslavia. The military authorities deny any health risk from
this with the same certainty as they deny any health risk from Agent Orange
used in Vietnam. What about public interest?
Bengtsson U: On the Instability of
Amalgams
The use of amalgam fillings has for a long time been questioned. First it
was said that "amalgam is stable", mercury is not released. The stability,
if true, is a good argument for the safety of dental patients. Tests
eventually showed that amalgams are not stable. The "safety" argument then
changed to "it's so little it can do no harm". Now this argument is
softened to "side effects are very rare". What is the next step? Science
has been kept away. In this article the knowledge game of distorted images
of reality is exposed, and the instability of amalgam fillings is
demonstrated - actually you can watch an animated film showing the
mercury droplet formation!
Bengtsson U: The symbiosis between the dental and industrial
communities and their scientific journals
When governments, trade organisations, the industrial
communities, and scientific media form networks, then public interest is the
first victim, because "the public" is the party being misinformed.
Harada Y, Noda K: How it Came About the Finding of Methyl Mercury
Poisoning in Minamata District
Originally published in Congenital Anomalies Vol. 28 Supplement, October 1988, this is the
description of the outbreak of the Minamata disease by the doctors meeting the patients and
looking for answers. It's an interesting story about how the disease ultimately, with the help of cats,
could be connected to the industrial pollution of organic mercury into the Minamata Bay, and in the
Sea accumulated in fish and shellfish, the main food for the poor fishing population victimized, as
well as for the cats in the harbour.
Walhjalt B: Greenwashing Allegations.
A presentation of "scientific greenwashing", and the case of
Hans-Olof Adami.
The concept of greenwashing was recently introduced to the Swedish
audience. A case study illustrates.
